Nurture 'The Living Room'

Nurture at Hollybrook

Hollybrook Academy actively promotes the Nurture principles across the school. AlOFFICIAL OFFICIALl staff have knowledge of the 6 principles and are encouraged to use these as a basis for their practice and communications with our young people.  The Nurture principles support our young people to feel safe, valued and promotes the development of our young people into respectful and confident young adults.

The Nurture Principles:

  1. Children and young peoples learning is understood developmentally.
  2. The classroom offers a safe base.
  3. The Importance of Nurture in the development of wellbeing.
  4. Language is a vital means of communication.
  5. All behaviour is communication.
  6. The importance of transition in young peoples lives.

The Nurture Base:

Our Nurture Base runs daily in the Living Room (named by the pupils)  – a bright, cosy space where a small group of young people are encouraged to feel safe and welcome. We work towards achieving targets, both in the base and in class, which aim to improve communication, social and language skills, develop emotional resilience and promote a sense of responsibility.

Our daily routine includes setting the table, sharing breakfast and washing the dishes – sometimes we cook our breakfast outside on a campfire! We play games and take part in daily activities that promote attention, engagement and turn-taking. We go on regular trips to practise our skills in different contexts, and to take part in wider community events. Parents and carers are encouraged to play an active part in our Nurture Base by attending regular coffee mornings, tea parties and other family events.
