Radio Hollybrook Launched

Earlier this week, Hollybrook Academy in Govanhill, welcomed Scotland’s First Minister, Nicole Sturgeon, and Glasgow City Councillor Liz Cameron, to the launch of its Radio Station. Also in attendance, and very much in a supporting role, were the school’s business partners KMPG and BBC Scotland, and the Radio Station’s mentors, Sunny Govan Radio. The whole school was entertained by live music from local band, Static Union, before pupils interviewed the guests.

The project, led by pupils from all year groups, was made possible by a grant from The Chamber of Commerce. Over the last few months, pupils and staff have been training to use the production equipment and software required to deliver radio programmes.
Pupils are hoping to use the Radio Station across all areas of the curriculum in the future; to record and deliver online programmes; and to encourage even closer links with the local community. They have already developed skills that will be easily transferable to work and life beyond secondary school, such as increased confidence, working in a team and an ability to communicate clearly. Both staff and pupils feel confident that the Radio Station will bring many benefits to the school and to the wider community for years to come.
